David McMullan on Lifan

Lifan is arguably the most famous motorcycle brand from China.

Founded in 1992, Chongqing Lifan Holding Co. Ltd. is a large private enterprise mainly engaged in scientific research & development, manufacturing and marketing (including exportation) of engines, general-purpose engines, motorcycles and automobiles, integrated with finance, securities and real estate.

Now, Lifan has more than 15,600 employees, with over 11,400 with education backgrounds of technical secondary school or junior college or above. Lifan has been the No. 1 exporter in Chongqing for years. On November 25th, 2010, its holding subsidiary Lifan Industry (Group) Co., Ltd. was successfully listed in Shanghai Stock Exchange (stock code 601777), firstly publicly issuing 200 million shares and raising funds of 2.9 billion RMB, and it became the first private enterprise of passenger vehicle listed in China A-share.


In 2012, Chongqing Lifan Holding Co. Ltd. achieved a sales income of RMB 22.8 billion, including the production and sales of 320,000 cars, 1.5 million motorcycles, 3.4 million engines and 412,500 general-purpose engines with export of USD 582 million.

By December 2012, Lifan has applied for 8007 patents, out of which 6951 have been authorized.
